  • 🎨 The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Time TBD · The Midland Theatre

    Arts
    View original ↗

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is not a film you watch quietly. It never was. When it opened in theaters, it flopped. Then a midnight screening at a small New York theater changed everything. Audiences started shouting lines back at the screen. They started showing up in costume. Within a few years, fans across the country were forming their own troupes to act the film out live, right in front of the movie itself, a tradition still alive at screenings today. Five decades later, it holds the record as the longest-running theatrical release in film history. It is still playing in theaters around the world, still packing midnight crowds, still turning strangers into a room full of old friends by the time the credits roll. That tradition comes to OUR stage for one night. Admission includes a Fan Prop Pack built scene-by-scene for this film, with a printed guide so first-timers know exactly when to toss, ring, snap, and sing along. Come dressed as your favorite character, or don't dress up at all. Either way, you'll be part of the show, not just watching it. First time at Rocky Horror? You'll be welcomed as a "virgin," a badge every longtime fan wore once too. There is a seat waiting for you, and a whole room ready to make some noise. This is a night built for people who want more than a movie. It is built for people who want a story they'll still be telling next Halloween. Heads Up: This One's Rated R The Rocky Horror Picture Show carries an R rating for mature themes, sexual content, and adult humor. Standard R-rated guidance applies: guests under 17 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This is also a rowdy, costume-heavy, audience-participation crowd, so plan accordingly.

    Education
    View original ↗

Strange things are afoot in the Buckeye State; explore the unnatural side of Ohio's heritage and urban legends from its stored history with authors Kristina Smith and Kevin Moore. Ohio echoes with tales of creatures, ghosts, and other unexplained phenomena. A monster that appeared to be half-man and half-dog and wielding a 2-by-4 terrorized a small Northwest Ohio town during the summer of 1972. Over the years, visitors to a quiet Cincinnati suburb claim to have been accosted by a human-size, leathery frogman lurking near the riverbank. For generations, hikers and hunters have reported seeing Bigfoot throughout forests across Ohio, and some of the most notorious and well-documented UFO encounters on record have taken place here. Unnatural Ohio: A History of Buckeye Cryptids, Legends & Other Mysteries, published by The History Press in September 2023, was based on a special exhibit at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums on Ohio folklore and legends. Learn more at rbhayes.org.

The New York native, now living in Buenos Aires, has spent his career building entire worlds inside his songs. He inhabits characters with startling empathy. Lighthearted ballads and adulterous love songs, dirges and diatribes that skewer politics, prejudice, war, and religion, and yes, the occasional comic monologue from a cow stuck in a barbed wire fence. Each song is a little world unto itself, framed in haunting acoustic melodies that linger long after the last note. Shindell’s path to that craft has been anything but ordinary. He has inhabited a Zen Buddhist monastery, busked the streets of Paris, and spent the pandemic out on the wide-open Argentine Pampa, reading, writing, taking long walks, and tending the garden. That cross-border, cross-threshold life informs everything he writes. He moves through experience as both immigrant and emigrant, illuminating the human condition through narrative song. His most recent album, Careless, was meticulously recorded over three years in New York and Buenos Aires. Eleven songs given the time, space, and latitude to truly stretch out. While his signature acoustic guitar work is still front and center, Shindell also plugged in more this time around. β€œThe wider sonic and dynamic range of the electric has been a real inspiration. Rejuvenating,” he says. Innovative, original, and occasionally spiritual, his songs champion the downtrodden, exalt the disaffected, and wax empathetic for those lost to society’s fringes. He returns to the road now for a limited run of performances, and OUR stage is one of them. This is the kind of show where you stop talking, start listening, and find yourself thinking about it long after the drive home.
