    Education Music Sports
    View original ↗

Singer-songwriter Jesse Ruben has built his career on a simple but uncommon belief: that music, at its best, is an act of generosity. Raised in Philadelphia and shaped by 15 years in New York City, Jesse developed a sound rooted in folk-pop craftsmanship and lyrical precision. He has always written songs the way a good novelist writes a scene: specific enough to feel true, universal enough to feel like yours. That quality has defined his catalog from his earliest recordings to his biggest streaming moments. "We Can," the song that introduced Jesse to a national audience, began as a personal challenge. Training for the New York City Marathon, Jesse channeled the mental work of long-distance running into a song about human potential. It landed everywhere. TODAY Show host Hoda Kotb personally invited him to perform it live on air. Teachers began playing it in classrooms. Coaches used it in locker rooms. What started as a running anthem became something more: a community organizing principle. That community eventually became The We Can Project, a formal initiative Jesse founded to help elementary and middle school students discover their passions and connect those passions to service. To date, more than 800,000 young people have participated in the program. His follow-up single "This Is Why I Need You" reached the top 10 in 12 countries and has accumulated more than 60 million streams across all platforms. The song earned Jesse a live session on MTV Asia and put his music in front of audiences on every continent. His catalog has since been featured on more than a dozen TV shows in the US and abroad, including Teen Mom, Switched at Birth, The Bachelor (Germany), and the Disney+ series Diary of a Future President. He has recorded for NPR and PBS, and has toured the US and Europe. Off stage, Jesse carries the same commitment to showing up that defines his live performances. After being diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2013, a journey that required consultations with 15 different doctors over nine months before finding answers, he channeled his experience into advocacy. He co-founded Generation Lyme, now the world's largest provider of online support communities for people affected by tick-borne illness. He has spoken at Lyme disease events across the US and Europe and has run the NYC Marathon eight times in total, raising funds for Lyme research and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. In 2018, Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut recognized his advocacy with the Starlight Award. Jesse Ruben performs with ease and openness. There is no distance between him and the audience. Songs that began on a stage in Brooklyn or a studio in Virginia arrive in the room with the full weight of everything they mean, and every person in the room seems to feel it personally

Her research focuses on Christian writings about Islam in the medieval period, with a particular interest in using critical theory to explore how scriptures interact and reinterpret each other.

Some bands have a moment. Big Head Todd and The Monsters have a career. For nearly four decades, Todd Park Mohr, Brian Nevin, Rob Squires, and Jeremy Lawton have been doing it their way: blues-soaked riffs, soul-forward vocals, and the kind of live show that earns you 35 headlining nights at Red Rocks. The story starts in a Colorado high school in the early eighties, three guys jamming until something clicked. By 1986 they had a name. By 1993, they had a platinum record. Sister Sweetly broke them nationally with four top 10 rock radio hits, and they never looked back. They shared stages with B.B. King, Neil Young, Robert Plant, The Allman Brothers, and Dave Matthews Band. They recorded "Boom Boom" with John Lee Hooker. They delivered a live NASA wakeup call for astronauts aboard the International Space Station. In 2023, they were inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame. Their 12th album, Her Way Out, finds them as sharp and hungry as ever. Road-tested, band-approved, and built on loud guitars, big bass, and well-placed organ, it's the sound of four guys who road-tested every song before they ever stepped into the studio, who still argue about arrangements, and who still genuinely love what they do. Nearly 40 years in, and the best seat in the house is still front row. Come hear why they've earned it.

New York Times bestselling author and award-winning journalist Keith O'Brien discusses his 2025 book, Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose, and the Last Glory Days of Baseball. Charlie Hustle was a NY Times best seller and a New Yorker Best Book of the Year winner of the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for biography. A book signing takes place from 6 - 6:45pm. Mr. O'Brien's presentation begins at 7pm. You may reserve up to 2 free tickets through Weathervane Playhouse's box office at Events for Weathervane Playhouse . Tickets are required for entry. Copies of Charlie Hustle book can be pre-ordered for pick-up at the event from Kicks Mix Bookstore . Additionally, copies of Keith's newest 2026 book, Heartland , can also be pre-ordered. Pete Rose is a legend. He compiled more hits than anyone in the history of baseball, a record he set decades ago that still stands today. He was a working-class white guy from Cincinnati who made it; less talented than tough, and rough around the edges. He was everything that America wanted and needed him to be, the American dream personified, until he wasnโ€™t. In the 1980s, Pete Rose came to be at the center of one of the biggest scandals in baseball history. He kept secrets, ran with bookies, took on massive gambling debts, and he was cast out for betting on baseball and lying about it. Charlie Hustle tells the full story of one of Americaโ€™s most epic tragediesโ€”the rise and fall of Pete Rose. Drawing on firsthand interviews with Rose himself and with his associates, as well as on investigators' reports, FBI and court records, archives, a mountain of press coverage, Keith Oโ€™Brien chronicles how Rose fell so far from being Americaโ€™s โ€œgreat white hope.โ€ It is Pete Rose as we've never seen him before. Keith has written four books, been a finalist for the PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sportswriting, been longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, and has contributed to multiple publications over the years. His newest book, Heartland: A Forgotten Place, an Impossible Dream, and the Miracle of Larry Bird, was released March 2026. Keith's work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, the Atlantic, the Washington Post, and on National Public Radio. His radio stories have aired on All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and Weekend Edition, as well as Marketplace and This American Life. A Midwesterner by birth, O'Brien grew up in Cincinnati and graduated from Northwestern University. He now lives in New Hampshire with his wife, two children, two dogs and two cats.

Time TBD · The Midland Theatre

    Arts Music
    View original ↗

They never saw Chicago perform live. They had no sheet music. Working entirely by ear from recordings and videos, Leonid Vorobyev and his circle of elite musicians reconstructed one of the most complex catalogs in American rock โ€” and did it so perfectly that Chicago themselves took notice. That's the origin story of Leonid & Friends, the globally acclaimed 11-piece collective that has taken the music world by storm โ€” and is coming to the Midland Theatre in Newark, Ohio. Formed by multi-talented musician and producer Leonid Vorobyev, the group draws elite vocalists and instrumentalists from Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, and beyond, united by a shared obsession with celebrating the golden era of American horn-driven rock. What began as a retirement gift to himself โ€” a single studio cover of a Chicago song โ€” quickly went viral. Chicago's own members praised the recordings and shared them on their official website. Chicago's original drummer Danny Seraphine was so moved, he joined the band on stage during one of their U.S. shows. Wikipedia The internet went wild, and the world followed. Today, Leonid & Friends have blown the minds of legions of fans with their uncanny ability to capture the spirit, musicality, and fire of American supergroup Chicago โ€” racking up over 200 million video views and more than 200 successful U.S. shows. Arcada Theatre With 500 million combined views across platforms, multiple sold-out coast-to-coast tours, and fans who travel show to show just to hear them again, this is not your average tribute act. In concert, Leonid & Friends deliver a stunningly authentic and exhilarating experience: a razor-tight horn section, rich vocal harmonies, and unmistakable rock & roll soul that fills every corner of the room. Expect timeless anthems like "25 or 6 to 4," "Make Me Smile," "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?," "Feelin' Stronger Every Day," "Beginnings," "Questions 67 & 68," and "Hard to Say I'm Sorry / Get Away" โ€” alongside select surprises from an ever-expanding repertoire that includes Earth, Wind & Fire, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Steely Dan, The Carpenters, and other beloved '70s favorites. Ohio has always known great music. This is one night you don't want to miss. MEET AND GREET ADD ON: A wonderful opportunity for fans to meet and interact with Leonid & Friends. Quantity is limited at each show. Shortly after the concert, attendees will be allowed to meet the band, have a group photo taken, and the opportunity to chat with band members and have merchandise or memorabilia signed. Must have a show ticket to participate in the Meet and Greet.

John E. Hancock talks about his book, Traveler's Guide to Ancient Ohio: Featuring the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks . This compact, richly illustrated travel guide takes visitors to the many Indigenous earthwork wonders of southern Ohio, including the brilliant landscape monuments recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. The author recounts the 30-year story of how this project came aboutโ€”the vision for a curated, regional approach to Ohioโ€™s brilliant American Indian earthworksโ€”and describes how this book showcases southern Ohioโ€™s rich and surprising layers of cultural heritage for both armchair and on-site travelers. A Q&A session and a book signing take place after the lecture. Copies of his book are available for purchase during the event. About the Author: John E. Hancock (M. Arch. McGill University) taught architectural history and design at the University of Cincinnati for four decades. His expertise in environmental meaning and experience has informed his leadership of both actual and virtual cultural heritage tours in Ohio and across Europe. Working with interdisciplinary teams and Native advisors since the 1990s, he has created many public education media projects about Ohioโ€™s Indigenous earthworks, including The Ancient Ohio Trail website (2014). Most recently, John served as the principal author and photographer for the successful Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks UNESCO World Heritage nomination (2023), in collaboration with the Ohio History Connection and National Park Service. He has now re-edited and expanded that work for release from Smithsonian Books (2026).
