🏘️ Cowbirds: Villainous Mobsters or Misunderstood?
CommunityView original ↗Dr. S.K. Winnicki walks through the biology of Brown-headed Cowbirds, paying close attention to the ways they interact with their host species and the current state of cowbird biology research. Cowbirds are an Ohio bird species notorious for their breeding system called "brood parasitism"—they lay their eggs in the nests of hundreds of other bird species, forcing those birds to feed their ravenous young. They've been painted as dastardly villains, but what are they really? Dr. Winnicki is a postdoctoral researcher and instructor at The Ohio State University, studying the historical birds of Ohio as part of the Ohio Bird Atlas team. Prior to this role, S.K. studied baby bird growth during Master's research (Kansas State University) and doctoral research (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), and the effect of cowbirds on grassland sparrows during undergraduate work (Denison University). When not researching birds, S.K. is out photographing birds or talking about them on social media; for more information see S.K.'s website at www.skwinnicki.com .

ArtsExperience the art of glassblowing! Create a glass project you select with individual guidance from our professional glass artist. We've made scheduling easier! Select the monthly project or pick from our current list of options. You can now create a variety of glass all throughout the year! We hope you enjoy the new freedom of choosing your project and a user-friendly check-out system. *Instructions: Simply select your date and check out, then receive a confirmation from us once it is approved within 48 business hours. Registration Required/Prices Vary by Project, General Price Range: $35-$75/Members receive a $10 discount | Ages 12+ Reserve a Session! Things to Remember about Glassblowing Experiences Pre-registration is required for all glassblowing experiences. (Register early! Experiences sell-out quickly) Participants must be 12 years of age or older You will work one-on-one with our artist. Sessions range from 15-30 minutes depending on the piece being made For your safety, closed-toe shoes and eye protection (provided by The Works) must be worn at all times in the Glass Studio All participants must fill out The Works Glass Studio Release Form on-site prior to their experience Please plan to arrive a few minutes prior to your session. If you arrive late, you may be asked to wait for the next session, if available We are unable to provide refunds for glass experiences. Please call Guest Services at 740.349.9277 for more information Your piece will be cooled slowly in our annealer and will be ready to pick-up one week after your experience.
